Rumor is a social, cultural and political phenomenon. What made English society in the early sixteenth century a breeding ground for rumors was the inherent instability of that transitional period. The emergence and proliferation of rumors are due not only to the participation and manipulation of various forces, but also to the tortuous expressions of various demands and interests. By analyzing the rumors in the novel The Mirror and the Light, readers can have a better understanding of the battles among powers and officials in the British Empire during the “Cromwell period”, the intrigues inside and outside the court, the gangs between the states, and the suffering people complained. A three-dimensional picture of British society in the first half of the 16th century becomes clear.
