On Naipaul's Construction of the Other in the Colonial Caribbean

摘　　要：英国作家V.S.奈保尔在游记和历史书写中展现了加勒比地区的殖民历史与社会现状,揭示了欧洲人对被殖民者的排斥和压迫。游船、传教站和监狱均是具有后殖民空间隐喻的异托邦。游船穿行于英国和特立尼达之间,使宗主国和殖民地在物理空间和文化空间内相连。传教站是殖民者教化被殖民者的宗教符号,充斥着浓重的种族主义气息。西班牙港监狱则是殖民官员和狱卒展现主体权威的最佳场所。在这些异质空间内,空间的分裂和对峙加剧了权力主体和边缘他者意识形态上的对立。殖民者和统治者是空间秩序的制定者和空间规则的掌控者,通过等级划分和区域割裂成为享有绝对权力的空间主体。而被殖民者和非人类自然则在种族主义和物种主义的双重规训下,成为空间中的权力他者。V.S.Naipaul,a diaspora writer,depicts and constructs the negative space of the Other in the Caribbean in his travels and historical writings,in order to reveal the European exclusion and oppression of the colonized.The boat,the station,and the prison are all the postcolonial images related to the space of the Other:the boat travels on the middle passage and connects the empire and its colonies in both the physical and cultural space;with a strong tinge of racial discrimination,the station serves as one of the religious symbols of the colonists,through which the indigenous people are ideologically related to the colonial power;the prison in the colonial period becomes a best place for the colonial officials and warders to manifest their political power and social status.Thus,the spatial division and confrontation exacerbate the ideological binary between the colonists and the colonized.The former,together with the local ruling class,make the order and thus become the spatial Subjects through hierarchical and regional division,while the latter,including the non-Europeans and the non-human beings,are subjected to the cruel and severe discipline and alienation,before they are finally forced to become the Other.
