摘 要:乔纳森·弗兰岑以敏锐的目光审视美国都市社会的大众文化形态及其对严肃艺术生存境遇的影响。他将深陷大众文化重重包围的严肃艺术创作视为痛苦经历,可与孤独和不适相提并论。其小说《自由》正是通过书写人物理查德在严肃音乐创作过程中遭受的冷遇和挫折,阐明严肃艺术与大众文化之间的关系,表达了对文化工业产品泛滥的焦虑,以及对被大众文化消解的现代人审美感受力进行审美救赎的希冀。Jonathan Franzen closely examines the forms of mass culture in American urban society and its influence on the survival situation of serious art.He regards serious artistic creation,which is tightly surrounded by mass culture,as a painful experience often accompanied by loneliness and discomfort.In his novel Freedom,by depicting Richard's cold reception and setbacks in the process of serious music composition,Franzen clarifies his thoughts on the relationship between serious art and mass culture,expresses his anxiety over the penetration of culture industry,and conveys his wishes of aesthetic redemption for those who have been paralyzed by mass culture and lost their aesthetic sensibility.
