Market Chains and Its Social Relationship Foundation:A Case Study of Overseas Tea Trade in the First Half of the 20th Century

摘  要:本文对比考察了民国时期外销茶和侨销茶贸易的经营过程及其市场后果,试图通过对中间商角色的分析,阐述社会机制在农产品市场链运作过程中所起的重要作用。研究发现,市场交易链与社会关系相互配合的状况,很大程度上决定了产业能否良性发展。外销茶中间商在资本和商品流通中都只扮演中转站的角色,侨销茶中间商则深嵌地方社会和南洋市场的关系网络中,这导致二者在产品质量和市场通路问题的解决上存在着意愿和能力的差异,并带来了不同的产业发展结果。政府的茶叶统制极力取消中间商,实际上取消了侨销茶本地及南洋社区之间关联和沟通的枢纽,最终不利于整个产业的有序发展。这一研究对于当下的农业现代化转型亦有重要的启发意义。This paper compares the different forms of the market chain of overseas Chinese trade and overseas sales in the Chinese tea business in the first half of the 20th century,focusing on the course of business and its commercial consequences via analyzing the role of the middle-man.This paper argues that the interplay between social mechanisms and the market chain decides the condition of the industry.Middle-man in overseas sales plays only the role of a way station in the circulation of capital and goods,while Chazhuang in overseas Chinese trade is deeply embedded in the network of relationships both in China’s local society and in Southeast Asian society.This leads to differences in their willingness and power to solve the problems concerning the quality of their goods and market accessibility.The government repressed the mode of the middle-man in overseas Chinese trade,thereby damaging the bridge between overseas Chinese tea business people and societies of their hometown and Southeast Asia.This research has implications for modern agricultural transformation.
