Researchers have long viewed early medieval works on Roman history as rough compilations of the works of ancient Roman historians and considered them lack in research value. However, recent studies of the quantity of medieval manuscripts show that Roman history was one of the most interesting subjects for medieval historians and readers, which is a phenomenon deserving reflection. The national history works of Jordanes the Goth and Paul the Lombard received widespread attention, but these two closely related works of Roman history have been neglected. As two earliest medieval works of Roman history in Latin, they had many Christian historiographical commonalities. Both authors of these two medieval works shared similar barbarian and Christian identities, yet their respective stands on the Roman Church and Constantinople gave their works a different appearance.
