In Chinese fake attributive construction(e.g.,“Tade laoshi dang-de-hao.”)the attributive-head structure“N1 de(的)N2”is interpreted as the experiencer-role relationship(i.e.“Ta dang laoshi”),thus violating the default syntax-semantics match. This paper analyzes the cognitive basis of“N1 de(的)N2”and the motivation underlying the fake attributive reading within the framework of access and activation model proposed by cognitive grammar. It is proposed that“N1 de(的)N2”resides in serially accessing N1 and N2,and hence gives rise to their integration as one grouping on the basis of their cognitive connection. The semantic distinction between attributive and fake attributive readings originates from the different ways to elaborate this connection. As for the attributive reading, its elaboration of this connection hinges on the conceptual structures of the two nominals.By contrast,as for the fake attributive reading, its elaboration depends upon the conventional event or situational frame activated by the particular discursive context, which brings about an unsymbolized conceptual grouping as well as an unconventional form-meaning match.Given that constituency is not postulated as a fundamental syntactic construct from this perspective, there is no justification for a strict syntax-semantics match.
