摘 要:本研究使用多层次模型方法,分析了中国英语学习者议论文中名词短语复杂度5个学期的历时变化。研究结果显示:1)总体上,从句(包括定式和非定式从句)修饰的名词短语的相对频数并未随着学期推移发生显著变化,而大部分从属短语修饰的名词短语的相对频数随着学期推移显著增加,这符合句法复杂度发展次序理论(Biber et al.2011)的预测,证明该理论指标具有较高的效度;2)高、低水平学习者在大部分名词短语复杂度指标的增速上不存在显著差异,但在名词短语词频和多样性上存在质性差异;3)学习者所处的语言发展阶段是影响名词短语复杂度变化趋势的重要因素。Using multilevel modeling,this study analyzed how the complexity of noun phrases in Chinese EFL learners’argumentative writing changed over five school terms.The results indicated the following:1)Overall,the complexity of noun phrases modified by both finite and nonfinite dependent clauses did not change significantly,while the complexity of those modified by phrases progressed significantly,which supported the validity of the developmental stages hypothesis proposed by Biber et al.(2011).2)There were no significant differences in growth rates in most complexity indices of noun phrases among high and low-level Chinese EFL learners,but there were significant differences in word frequency and variety of noun phrases.3)Learners’current stage of language development affected the trends of how the complexity of noun phrases changed.
