A series of poly(arylene ether nitriles)containing carboxyl groups(CPENs)with different molecular weights are synthesized through nucleophilic substitution reaction using bisphenol-A,2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile and 2,6-dichlorobenzoic acid as raw materials. The structures of CPENs are characterized with the Fourier transform infrared spectra(FT-IR),and the molecular weights variations of CPENs are measured by the gel permeation chromatography(GPC),and the number-average molecular weight of the synthesized CPENs is about 10~20kg/mol.The thermal properties of CPENs are analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).The glass transition temperature of CPENs increases from 107°C to 153°C with the increase of molecular weight, and the thermal decomposition temperature is above 370°C,which indicates that the CPENs have good thermal properties. And the solubility of CPENs is tested in common solvents,it is found that the CPENs have a good solubility in the ethyl acetate, acetone, toluene, chloroform and some polar solvents.
