This paper will trace the reception of Ovid’s exile poetry from the first century CE to the present. It will do so selectively via a series of case studies, which will go into varying degrees of detail. After beginning with a brief discussion of reception studies and their place in Classical Studies as a whole, the paper will proceed to a summary of the scholarly reception of these poems in particular over the past forty years or so.It will then go back to consider Seneca the Younger in the first century CE,then leap forward to the 6th-century poet Venantius Fortunatus, quickly summarize the subsequent medieval period before lingering on Petrarch in the 14th century, and then move on to the great German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the late 18th century before concluding with the Austrian novelist Christoph Ransmayr in the late 20th century. The examples chosen will illustrate both the varying degrees of interest in Ovid’s exile poetry at different times and also the particular interests in the poetry that were prevalent at each of those times.
