Analysing the Benefits of Teacher Participation in Training and Development Programmes

摘　　要：Teaching is a job that requires practitioners to intermittently update and upgrade their knowledge,skills,attitude,and values to make them abreast with current demands of the work.Hence,training and development activities which lead to teacher professional development and professionalism are the watch words for serious organisations such as the Ghana Education Service(GES).GES,authorities of senior high schools,among others,tend to organise or sponsor various training and development programmes for their staff.It is ideal therefore to investigate the practice of providing training and development activities for teachers to enhance their professional development and the benefits the teachers derive from it.In the bid to undertake the study,quantitative approach,using descriptive survey design,was used.Simple random sampling technique was relied on to select the study respondents.The instrument used to gather data for the study is a self-administered questionnaire.Both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were employed for the data analysis.The study disclosed that the majority of the teachers in the schools highly participate in training and development programmes,mainly through workshops,seminars,and talks.The teachers’participation in training and development programmes is deemed to benefit them and in several areas of their work.Based on the findings of the study,appropriate recommendations have been proffered to individuals and authorities with the wherewithal to use other potent means of delivering training and development programmes to help improve teachers’professional development and practices for the benefits of stakeholders of education.
