My ántonia, one of the masterpieces by American writer Willa Cather, is a classic text in which the male narrator portrays the images of women and is characterized by ekphrasis.Words and images are put in a unity of opposites, behind which a gender principle is implied.Words are self-sufficient, civilized and temporal, symbolizing men, while images are decorative, irrational and spatial, symbolizing women. In Jim’s ekphrastic narration, both linguistic hegemony of representing female characters as aesthetic objects according to his own demand and the implicit expectation and tendency to return to the state of childhood ekphrastic synergy are embodied.Meanwhile, the heroines in the novel, such as ántonia and Lena, incorporate feminine pictorial language into such artistic forms as dressmaking and photography, conveying the female artists’ impulse to air their own voice in the interstices of male texts and to create an inclusive female artistic atmosphere.Rereading My ántonia from the angle of ekphrasis not only provides a better analysis of the gender reality reflected in the novel, but also gives a fresh perspective for interpreting its themes by having Jim’s plight epitomize that of the whole country and the times.
