Under the new development pattern, the digital economy has become a new engine to promote the green development of the economy and achieve the dual carbon goal. This paper empirically tests the reduction of carbon emissions by the digital economy based on balanced panel data of 285 prefecture-level and above cities from 2011-2019.The findings show that:the digital economy can significantly suppress urban carbon emissions, and this conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests;the intermediary mechanism test finds that improving urban production efficiency and technological innovation levels are the two basic paths through which the digital economy significantly suppresses urban carbon emissions; The inhibitory effect of the digital economy on urban carbon emissions is also influenced by the degree of marketization and urbanization, showing a threshold effect and an inverted " U" and inverted " N" trend, respectively;the impact of the digital economy on carbon emissions is heterogeneous across regions, urban agglomerations and non-urban areas. The impact of digital economy on carbon emissions is heterogeneous across regions, urban agglomerations and non-urban areas.
