摘　　要：从作家的日记和手稿看,英国作家约翰·福尔斯并非天赋卓异的天才少年,当他突然认识到人生的当务之急是避免湮灭,便决意以文学成就对抗湮灭。他在低薪、贫困、啃老、自我怀疑、劳而无功中默默地努力15年。他在经济大势、社会大势、文学内部危机重重、个人从未有片言只语发表的不利情况下,试图逆流而上,横空出世,这需要极大的心理勇气。福尔斯的勇气来自于天命召唤、生命意识、极端自我、版权制度等多种因素的合力。British writer John Fowles was not a genius as presupposed drawing on his diaries and drafts.His first imperative was to overcome oblivion by pen.He determined to pursue literature in spite of low-paying jobs,pov-erty,no parental support,self-doubts and fruitless efforts for 15 years.Under the adverse economic,social and literature crisis with a wisp of chance of publishing,he swam against the tide and roared across the horizon.His overwhelming courage was the combined product of his innate calling,consciousness of life,extreme narcis-sism,and copyright protections etc.
