English poet Philip Larkin takes animals, plants, the English landscape and the daily life of English people as his subject matters, and his poems contain a profound awareness of “A Community of Life”. With the New Materialist critical discourse in train, this paper analyzes the awareness of botanical life in Larkin’s plant and landscape poems, explores the awareness of animal ethics in his animal poems, and excavates the “agency” of plants and animals, as well as the awareness of emotional interaction between the human and nonhuman, constructed on this basis in his life philosophy poems. Larkin not only emphasizes the “agency” of animals and plants, diminishing the distinctions between human and nonhuman, but also focuses on emotional interactions among animals, plants and human beings through their “agency”, highlighting the emotional power of animals and plants to shape human emotions and heal human psychological trauma. Animal and plant narratives not only enrich the ecological and ethical connotation of Larkin’s poetry, but also deepen the dimension of his life philosophy, demonstrating his awareness of “A Community of Life” integrating ecology, life and living.
