Yu Miri’s Tokyo Ueno Station is a narrative of spatial metaphor and memory-reconstruction of the soul and experience of those who do not belong in Japanese society. It demonstrates how Japanese people at the bottom of society and its class structures have to face their marginal status embodied both in space and memory. Reading the novel from the two dimensions of spatial narrative and memory-construction, this paper intends to explore not only Yu’s narrative strategy and writing style, but also the narrative structure behind the novel’s representations of space and places of memory, suggesting a new perspective for the study of Yu’s novel in such light.
