Functional constipation is a common clinical symptom and is characterized by diffi culty in defecation, decreased frequency or a sense of incomplete defecation.Commonly seen in elderly patients, the defi ciency of both the spleen and kidney is one of the key factors in its pathogenesis. The spleen and kidney are viewed as the congenital and acquired foundation of the human body respectively, and its normal physiological activities need to be maintained by them. The imbalance of intestinal flora, which often interacts with the spleen and kidney, can lead to a variety of diseases. This article will explore the infl uences of intestinal fl ora on functional constipation in the elderly from the theory of"spleen-kidney correlation",in a bid to provide a theoretical basis for the syndrome differentiation and treatment of the disease from the perspective of the spleen and kidney and to expand ideas and methods for its treatment in traditional Chinese medicine.
