The great Victorian writer George Eliot(Mary Anne Evans,1819-1880)and her partner, significant other George Henry Lewes(1817-1878),philosophical writer, literary critic, dramatist, actor, editor, loved Shakespeare.Eliot's engagement is clear from her novels where she cites the bard,31 times in her chapter epigraphs, more than any other writer, apart from herself. In her letters, she mentions Shakespeare over one hundred times, and also in her notebooks and journals on innumerable occasions. Her partner's engagement with Shakespeare is evident too,in his early acting,in his literary criticism that had an impact upon subsequent English Shakespearian criticism(see Hirshberg:183-184),and in his miscellaneous prose, letters and marginalia. In this paper,I will present the evidence of their love for Shakespeare, discuss what specifically in Shakespeare appealed to them, explore differences in their responses to Shakespeare, and what their Shakespearean engagements reveal about their work, themselves and, very briefly, the ways in which they reflect elements of the reception of Shakespeareatthetime.
