The awarding of the title of meritorious officials is often called meritorious minster in historical materials. The Tang Dynasty began to award the title of meritorious officials, followed by the Five Dynasties, the Song Dynasty and the Liao Dynasty. In the Northern Song Dynasty, the title of meritorious officials became a system with fixed content, and officials were given the title of meritorious ministers when they worshipped the prime ministers. Because of the empty name, Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty dismissed it during Yuanfeng Period. Awarding meritorious officials could encourage officials to maintain the rule of the dynasty.
