In this study the impact of benthos on plants growth and the response of wastewater purifying capacity of wetlands to benthos is investigated, with reeds, cannas and water iris used as test plants, and loach and earthworms used as test benthos. The results show that loach and earthworms promote the growth of plant height, leaf length and leaf width. The removal rate of TP,COD,ammonia nitrogen and TN has been improved when loaches and earthworms are added into constructed wetlands.By comparing Constructed WetlandⅠand Constructed WetlandⅡ,loaches increase removal rate of TN by 5.89%;by comparing Constructed Wetland II and Constructed WetlandⅢ,earthworms increase removal rate of COD and TN by 3.18%and 1.29%,respectively;while loaches and earthworms combined help improve TN removal rate by as high as 7.18%.By comparing Constructed Wetland III and Constructed WetlandⅣ,green sand in the matrix has a great role in promoting the removal of 4 indicators mentioned above.Through varied comparative studies,it is found that benthos have obvious promoting effects on wastewater treatment.
