The swelling characteristics of expansive mudstone are discussed in the context of tunneling project. The tests usecretaceous mudstone and tertiary mudstone taken from the tunnel construction site. The swelling rate and pressure of the mudstone under different conditions are tested through modifying the coring machine to adopt the dry sampling method and adopting the method of cooling by passing high pressure air instead of water which could avoid the problems of water content of the rock and soil and stuck rotation. The study shows that the mineral composition of cretaceous mudstone and tertiary mudstone is almost the same;the swelling rate of cretaceous mudstone and tertiary mudstone is 1.5%~3.0% and 1.0%~2.0%, respectively. The water absorption of cretaceous mudstone is higher than that of tertiary mudstone. Generally, the expansibility of both rocks is lower and the water absorption is weaker;the swelling force of both mudstones grows rapidly in the early stage of water immersion, and the average value of the final swelling force reaches 231.6 kPa and 250.8 kPa, respectively. It provides a basis for the research and development of deformation failure mechanism and deformation control technology of expansive mudstone tunnel.
