摘 要:There were hardly any yards on the smaller streets of Guangzi section. With little space between the homes, doors and windows faced the unpaved streets and the homes on the other side. The families were dirt poor when they first showed up after roaming around, children in tow, their belongings hanging on shoulder poles.A home with a yard never entered their minds.Besides,as we've seen, their thoughts were on the homes they left, with no plans on settling here.Given that mindset, why not throwupa one-ortwo-roommud-brick shackas a roof overthe heads of a family of transients and be done with it?Building the houses very close to each other saved them the trouble of throwing up walls between them. The communal wall was not a cold wall, which benefitted both houses.Facing one another across narrow streets, the people felt safe.If something bad were to happen to any of them,a shout out the door or window could be heard up and down the street.
