Gregor Mendel:The father of genetics who opened a biological world full of wonders

摘　　要：A few giants in science once made discoveries that opened doors for us to enter a world never seen before.As the father of modern genetics,Gregor Mendel is considered one of these giants owing to his discovery of the basic principles of inheritance.Retrospectively,it can be argued that the greatest century of discovery in biology was a period from the 1850s/1860s to the 1950s/1960s.Two of the giants in biological sciences at the beginning of this century of discoveries,on whose shoulders we stand,are Charles Darwin,who published On the Origin of Species in 1859 with geographic and biological observations from his 5-year voyage on HMS Beagle that lead to his macro-concept of evolution by natural selection(Darwin,1859),and Gregor Mendel,who did 10-year crossing and counting experiments using the humble garden pea.
