Researches show that offspring′s educational attainment has a positive effect on mental health of parents in China. However, it is not clear how this effect changes with age, nor how this effect varies among different cohorts. From the perspective of life course, we analyzes the relationship between the mental health of parents born before 1965 and the educational attainment of their children with growth curve model and data from three waves of Chinese Family Panel Studies(CFPS)(CFPS2012,2016,2018).Within each cohort, the influence of offspring′s educational attainment on paternal mental health showed a“cumulative advantage/disadvantage effect”when people get older. Between different cohorts, the effect of offspring’ s educational attainment on mental health was stronger in the later-born cohorts( born in 1950 and later).Besides,the“advantage/disadvantage accumulation”effect was more obvious in people with non-agricultural Hukou. Therefore, government should pay attention to the development of education and promote equitable development of education in urban and rural areas. Meanwhile, strengthening on job training for low-educated people, constantly improving the fairness and security level of social insurance, formulating special health policies for elder parents with low-educated children are all effective ways to promoting the high-quality development of healthy aging.
