From September 2014 to April 2015, to cooperate with the capital construction, the Beijing Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics excavated a cemetery of eunuchs in the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Linglong Alley, Balizhuang, Haidian District, Beijing. The cemetery is located on the east and west sides of a temple of the Ming Dynasty-Maha Nunnery(now Balizhuang Primary School). A rectangular vertical earthen shaft pit tomb(No. 2014HLCM5) in the north, slightly east, of the western burial area( Area C), has been disturbed before, but grave goods stored in the niche are still relatively complete, with a group of stone seals that are particularly exquisite. According to the unearthed title deed(deed of land purchase for afterlife), the tomb occupant is Ma Yongcheng-a eunuch of the Directorate of the Imperial Regalia(sishejian) and a member of the powerful group of eunuchs “Eight Tigers” during Emperor Wuzong of Ming. The excavation places great significance on studying the history, funeral customs and system of eunuchs in the Ming Dynasty;the unearthed set of stone seals and seal boxes provide new materials for studying ancient royal seals.
