摘　　要：《典型的美国佬》是一部蕴意深刻的小说。在细读文本的基础上,对小说中出现的重要意象或意象群、人物名称的象征意味和“美国梦”的象征载体进行探究,可以看出,作者任璧莲精心设置的这些意象和象征,喻示了主人公所遭遇的困境和陷入的危机,反映了“美国梦”的可能性和限度。通过探究意象和象征下隐藏的深刻内涵,读者可以更好地理解作品的主旨。Gish Jen’s Typical American is a novel full of profound connotations. On the basis of detailed reading of the text, a probe into such elements as important images or image group, the symbolic meaning of character names and symbolic carrier of “American Dream” can reveal that the author Gish Jen elaborately creates these images and symbols indicate the difficulties and crises encountered by the protagonist so as to reflect the possibilities and limits of the “American Dream”. By exploring the deeper connotations hidden beneath the imagery and symbols, readers can make a better understanding of the novel’s substance.
