The basin fault-depression lake basin, valleys, rivers, and piedmont alluvial fan of the Hutuo river are thoroughly analyzed as a unified physical geographical system, and the final formation age of the Hutuo river and its related controversial issues are summarized from two aspects of tectonic geomorphology and sedimentary response. The following are the main conclusions. The Shilingguan pass is a relic of a paleochannel that once cut through the Central Shanxi(Xinding-Taiyuan)Rift Valley around the turn of Miocene and Pliocene(>5.20 Ma).The Xinding and Taiyuan basins, two relatively independent intermountain faulted basins, had taken shape at 5.20 Ma as a result of the Shilingguan uplift. The Hutuo river completely had run through the Taihang Mountains, and flowed into the North China Plain during the early Quaternary(2.58-2.12 Ma).The regional Neotectonic movement is the main driving force for the formation of the Hutuo river. The debate about river capture of the Hutuo river can be ended because it does not flow southward into the Taiyuan basin and connect with the Fenhe river system.
