Premium effect often leads to high intensity development of buildings. In order to improve audio-visual comfort of human beings, virtual reality 3D technology is used to simulate the audiovisual environment from the perspective of a person walking. The effects of the span of water area, building storey number, and type of sound source on human comfort are investigated. The span of water area visually does not affect human comfort;low-rise,multi-storey buildings(3-6 storeys)could enhance human comfort;buildings higher than 6 storeys reduce human comfort. In terms of hearing comfort, the highest comfort level in the waterfront high-rise environment is the sound of birdsong, followed by the sound of running water, children playing, conversations, cars moving, and the lowest comfort level for construction sounds. The results of the study may help urban planners and architects to select the most appropriate number of building levels and sound sources for future urban waterfront planning and built environments(riverfront, lakefront, coastal).
