In the face of the current urgent ecological problems, Ulrich Brand, on the basis of absorbing Marx’s view of nature, the Regulation Theory of the Regulation School and Gramsci’s theory of hegemony, emphasized that nature is produced and possessed in a social way, and constructed a conceptual framework “society-nature relationship” from a dual-dimension of social domination and political domination. Brand then critically explained the regulatory crisis of capitalist production mode and the hegemonic logic of green capitalism as a response to this crisis in the framework of the “society-nature relationship”, aiming to achieve social-ecological transformation. As an analytical perspective on ecological crisis, Brand exposed the dangers of the “imperial mode of living” in northern states, although this analysis may fall into the predicament of insufficient transformational power due to the dilution of the inherent contradictions in capitalism. His pursuit of a harmonious and fair “social-nature relationship” will help us strengthen the institutional confidence of socialist ecological civilization, and provide a timely evidence for China to lead the global social-ecological transformation.
