"A Switch for Merchants to Become Well-informed Arbitrageurs":The Media Geography of Shopping by Telephone in 1930s Shanghai

摘  要:理解媒介与城市关系的两种常见路径:文本对城市的表征或工具对城市沟通效率的提升,皆抑制了媒介的生成性。与这二种路径不同,论文通过将1930年代上海“电话购货”中的“电话”概念化为一套由“电话交换区”、“电话销货指南”和“电话购货部”组合而成的都市媒介基础设施,来阐释电话在物质、符号与组织面向上社会技术性地嵌入经济交往并重组都市空间的方式。研究发现:基础设施意义上的电话与城市的接合可被视为一系列技术中介的都市社会空间实践,这些社会空间实践体现为“操奇计赢之枢纽”的动态生成。其中“操奇计赢”是电话介入的“谈议交易”活动;“枢纽”是在电话协调“谈议交易”时涌现的构成性中心,意味着交易关系的汇聚,且蕴含地理空间的向度。通过发掘电话在“操奇计赢”实践中的勾连、转译和重组的角色,论文为都市移动性所涉物质、交往与空间的相互缠结提供了新的日常韵律和理论想象,同时也对城市作为“社会技术性构成”这一理论主张提出了批判性反思。There are two common approaches to understanding the relationship between media and the city:representationalism and instrumentalism,both of which inhibit the generative power of media.This paper takes a different approach by conceptualizing the telephone as a media infrastructure.It examines the sociotechnical embeddedness of the telephone in economic interaction and urban spatial reorganization.This is done at material,symbolic,and organizational levels,based on the local experience of""Shopping by Telephone"in Shanghai in the 1930s.The coupling of the telephone as infrastructure with the city can be seen as a set of technology-mediated urban socio-spatial practices,from which the"switch for merchants to become well-informed arbitrageurs"emerged."Merchants arbitrage by becoming well-informed"is the practice of"negotiating and trading"mediated by the telephone.The"switch"is a"constitutive hub"emerging from"negotiating and trading"mediated by telephone.It also means the convergence of trading relations and the production of geographical space.By discovering the telephone's power to interconnect,translate,and reorganize,this paper provides a new everyday rhythm and theoretical imagination for the entanglement of matter,communication,and space involved in urban mobilities.It also provides a critical reflection on the city as a"socio-technical constitution".
