论《死者》中嵌套故事的作用

摘　　要：《死者》中马围绕比利王雕像转圈的嵌套文本凸显了小说中所有人物的精神瘫痪本质是故步自封,停滞不前,其具象是以忙碌、虚华、浮夸为表象的闭环式重复,其根源是他们追求的目标都是错误的。这一嵌套文本不仅凸显了主人公精神之死的本质、具象和原因,而且在象征层面补充说明了小说中常常被读者忽略的所有都柏林人精神之死的本质、具象和原因。它不仅引导读者将所有都柏林人个人的生活问题提升到爱尔兰人的集体精神之死的高度去认识,而且也以其丰富厚重的主题内涵为整部小说集作结。In The Dead,the embedded plot of the horse going around Billy King's statue highlights that the essence of the spiritual paralysis of all the characters in the short story is essentially self-confinement and stagnancy,and its concrete expression is a closed circle of repetition constituted by those characters'meaningless busyness,vanity and pomposity in appearance,and its root cause is that the goals they pursue are completely wrong.This embedded plot not only underlines the essence,the concrete expression and the cause of the spiritual death of the protagonist,but also at a symbolic level complements the essence,the concrete expression and the cause of the spiritual death of all Dubliners in the short story,which are often ignored by readers.It not only helps readers to realize that the issue of individual life of all Dubliners can be raised to that of collective spiritual death of the Irish nation,but also concludes the whole collection with its rich thematic connotation.
