摘　　要：英国汉学家杜德桥对中国古典小说《醒世姻缘传》的研究别开蹊径,可以作为我国学者研究中国古典小说的他山之石。他的成就在于:第一,运用历史眼光研究中国古典小说,将文学作品《醒世姻缘传》看作历史文献,深入解读文本背后社会史、宗教史的内涵;第二,从文本的内部声音和外在观察两个向度,重点阅读《醒世姻缘传》中“泰山进香”回目,探讨了泰山进香史、宗教组织、财务与后勤、游山、个人动机与家庭紧张等方面的内容;第三,为国内外学者提供新的思路,启发人们将《醒世姻缘传》从文学文本转变到社会文本研读。The English Sinologist Glen Dudbridge has a unique approach to studying Hsing-shih yin-yüan Chuan(The Bonds of Matrimony),which can be a reference for research on the classic Chinese novel in China.His achievements are as follows.First,he uses the historical perspective to study classic Chinese novels,taking the text of The Bonds of Matrimony as a historical document and thoroughly explains its social and religious connotations.Second,he focuses on reading the chapter“T’ai-shan Pilgrimage”in depth,discussing the contents of the history of the T’ai-shan Pilgrimage,its religious organization,the finance and logistics,mountain travel,personal motivation and family tensions and so on,through the two dimensions of internal voice and external observation.Third,he provides new ideas for scholars in China and abroad to consider The Bonds of Matrimony not as a literary text but as a social text.
