In her maiden work The Voyage Out(1915), Virginia Woolf tells the story of the adventure of the young pianist Rachel Vinrace, the central female protagonist, on her sea voyage on the Euphrosyne to South Africa. Woolf vividly depicts the awakening of Rachel’s female consciousness. However, this article proposes that to some extent, The Voyage Out is a novel full of explicit musical elements. In this novel, Woolf shares with her readers ample musical elements, such as the borrowing of the subtext from Richard Wagner’s music drama Tristan and Isolde and the choice of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op.111. By this means, Woolf reveals her arduous efforts to think dialectically about “music” and “literature”, the two distinctive artistic mediums, and their emotional intensity. Based upon her first literary venture The Voyage Out, Woolf initiates her own voyage in elucidating the long-lasting influence of music on herself and her oeuvre.
