Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong University(Philosophy and Social Sciences)has launched a column titled interviewing Distinguished Writers. This issue has Damon Galgut,2021 Booker Prize winner,as the guest, and Professor Andrew van der Vlies(University of Adelaide)as the Interviewer, focusing on the creation of The Promise and the voice of the narrator.According to Galgut, the space created by the lockdown might lead to a whole new sort of aesthetic. He introduces the structure of four“flashes”adopted in The Promise, where readers need imagination to fill in the space between flashes. For Galgut, ideas for his fiction tend to emerge from whatever is preoccupying him in a deeper way in his life at a certain point. He also discusses how the technique of using third-person narration to alert readers to the existence of someone else who is telling the story.Andrew van der Vlies categorizes different readers in the world:readers who want to read books that are about themselves in one way or another,or readers that want to read about other people. The discussants engage with the question of the dislocation of elements in allegorical writing. They also discuss the Afrikaans used in Galgut s work, the tensions between representation and appropriation, and the suggestiveness of the novel's title,The Promise.
