Regarding the origin of the waist pit burial customs among the Yue tombs of the Eastern Zhou in Hunan, there are two different opinions in the academic circles. One holds that the waist pits in Hunan,Guangxi, and Guangdong regions are essentially different from those in the Yin and Shang tombs in the Central Plains, and they don't have succession relationship even though sharing similar shapes and structures. The other believes that the Yue people in Hunan accepted the burial customs from the Central Plains in the Yin and Shang dynasties and spread them to Guangdong and Guangxi along with their southward migration.Actually, the waist pit burial customs in Hunan's Yue tombs and Hubei's Chu tombs have different origins and should be distinguished from each other. The former is a product of local indigenous culture that developed under the infuence of Zhou culture, while the latter belongs to the legacy of the Yin and Shang dynasties, which is a manifestation of the revival of the ritual of the Shang dynasty.
