Shushu署书refers to the ancient Chinese characters inscribed or signed on plaques,as titles of books,or for name cards of official titles. The shushu from Dunhuang include official titles mentioned in Han dynasty bamboo slips, descriptive inscriptions attached to the murals in Dunhuang caves, the titles of Dunhuang manuscripts from the Dunhuang Library Cave, and the titles of local officials. From the perspective of the"eight calligraphy styles"of the Qin and Han dynasties, the shushu style has never been explained clearly.Calligraphers often refer to these writings as "large character texts"(dazi bangshu大字榜书),but the meaning of this term is actually quite different. If only the words are different in size,it is impossible for shushu to be considered as belonging to one of the "eight calligraphy styles."The clearest characteristic of shushu text is that the brushstrokes are usually thicker, denser and more tightly arranged than the words around it;the words are meant to be eye-catching,tightly arranged, integrated together and difficult to split apart. This paper gives some examples demonstrating the shushu text written in Dunhuang official scripts(lishu隶书).The shushu used in regular documents will be studied in a separate article.
