The synthesis of all steroid hormones begins with intracellular cholesterol, and the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein(StAR)is specifically responsible for transporting the substrate cholesterol from the outer mitochondrial membrane to the inner mitochondrial membrane, which is the rate-limiting step in steroid hormone synthesis.StAR is highly conserved in different species, and its expression is mainly distributed in adrenal gland, ovary and testis. The expression of StAR gene has both direct and indirect effects on the reproductive process of the body.Abnormal expression of StAR gene can lead to the disorder of reproductive endocrine function and affect embryo development and spermatogenesis. In this paper, the basic structure characteristics and expression distribution characteristics of StAR were discussed.Based on the mechanism of StAR on cholesterol transport, the regulatory effects of StAR on animal and human reproductive endocrinology were reviewed,so as to provide theoretical reference for further research of StAR in reproductive application.
