Laser ultrasound has been widely concerned in the field of NDT with its advantages of non-contact,wide band and high resolution. In order to study the defect state of GIS basin-type insulator material,a method to indirectly judge the defect state by studying the acoustic attenuation characteristics using laser ultrasonic technology was proposed.A laser pulse width of 30 ns was used to scan an insulator material sample of a thickness of 5 mm.And the laser ultrasonic signal is received with a frequency of 100 kHz ultrasonic transducer. The influence of surface bubble defects on the acoustic attenuation coefficient is studied.By comparing the scanning results of the defective area and the non-defective area,it is shown that the attenuation coefficient decreases when the bubble defect exists, and increases with the increase of laser energy. When the energy reaches a certain value, the attenuation coefficient reaches a stable value. The feasibility of using acoustic attenuation characteristics to detect defects of basin insulator material is verified. This method also provides a basis for further quantitative characterization of microbubble defects.
