American writer Flannery O'Connor's short story A Good Man Is Hard to Find describes the identity crisis and redemption dilemma of the two protagonists,“the Misfits”and Bailey, which on a big part owes to the abnormal family relations of the two characters respectively. This paper tries to touch upon the doppelganger phenomenon with Bailey and his double“Misfit”as mutually reflecting mirror images. As Bailey's double,“the Misfit”enfleshes the contradictory relationship between the former and his mother;similarly,Bailey is depicted as the projection of identity confusion and the resulting violence and anti-social consequences of“Misfit”.The divided self in the doppelganger is a metaphor of identity crisis.O’Connor's portrayal of the lost identity of the two characters reflects the individual's belief crisis and existential dilemma in modern milieu and mirrors their pursuit and exploration of spiritual redemption.
