Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Zonisamide as a first and non-first add-on treatment for patients with epilepsy. Methods Retrospective analysis was performed on clinical data of outpatients with epilepsy who completed zonisamide as add-on treatment for 5 months in the Department of Neurology,Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from January to July 2022.the first add-on and non first add-on 42 patients respectively,84 patients in total. The efficacy and incidence of adverse reactions of zonisamide at the completion of 5 months of add-on treatment were evaluated. Results The efficiency of zonisamide as a first add-on treatment at 5 months was 79%,and that of zonisamide as a non-first add-on treatment was 59%.The retention rates of zonisamide at 5 months of therapy were 90%and 88%in two groups, respectively, and the adverse reaction rates were 26%and 37%,respectively.The common adverse reactions were dizziness, headache, anorexia, anorexia and weight loss, and drowsiness, etc. Conclusions The efficacy of zonisamide as a first add-on treatment for epilepsy is superior to non-first add-on.
