摘　　要：祖籍山东青岛的王清福是“美国华裔”第一人,不仅在美国创办《华洋新报》和《美华新报》等中文报纸,还在《北美评论》《大西洋月刊》《哈珀斯杂志》等报刊上用英语发表150余篇译介中国传统文化的文章。他准确阐述了中国的儒家思想和饮食文化,改编了典型文学文化人物形象,为中美两国文化交流搭建了桥梁。通过发掘王清福报刊文章的跨文化传播价值,厘清苏思纲新出王清福传记中涉及杂碎的不妥之处,将《西游记》在英语国家的译介史向前推进十年,重新审视王清福在中国文化海外传播史上的重要地位。Wong Chin Foo,whose ancestral home is located in Qingdao,Shandong province,is commonly known as one of the most outstanding Chinese Americans.He started two Chinese newspapers in the United States of America,and published in English more than 150 essays at such American newspapers and magazines as North American Review,The Atlantic Monthly and Harper’s Magazine.His efforts led to a well-designed introduction of traditional Chinese culture,chiefly in terms of popularizing Confucianism,Chinese cuisine and adapting typical literary and cultural imagery,and he had done a lot to promote cultural communication between the two countries.This study seeks to explore the values of Wong’s publications in cross-cultural communication,corrects certain errors concerning“chop suey”in Scott D.Seligman’s new biography of Wong’s,and updates the translation history of the well-known Journey to the West in the English-speaking countries,to be exact,one decade earlier than the known fact.The history of overseas transmission of Chinese culture renews itself because of Wong’s significant role.
