Thanks to the interdisciplinary consolidation that happened to the history of reading,of mentality and of thoughts,The Private Papers of a Bankrupt Bookseller regained some attention for its ingenious integration of the triple cultural functions of the bookseller, the reader and the writer into a single person.Still, while leaning heavily on study paradigms such as the history of reading,we tend to neglect those war trauma narratives which, when deemed as“covert progression”,actually both supply and subvert the overt narrative structure of Private Papers as well as the mainstream writings on the Great War.By following the so-called Woolfian“non-combatant”perspective in delineating the shell-shock effects,William Darling led the personal psychosomatic wounds and cognitive impairment problems from an individual level to a cultural memory and national, thus institutional mnemonics-oblivion level.Once read in a sardonic way,Private Papers indeed reveals many sarcasms and mockeries with regard to the Edwardian ideals,to the snobbish imperialism and the alienating characteristics of commercial capitalism.By reading Private Papers,it is not hard for us to view a divided cultural landscape of the post-war England.
