How Intellectual Elites Get Involved in News Production:The Correction Practice on China-related Coverage by the Press Group of Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding

摘　　要：“消极他者”是欧美关于中国议题长期广泛存在的社会文化框架之一。本文以英中了解协会新闻小组为考察对象,研究20世纪60年代英国部分左翼知识精英如何通过对欧美主流媒体涉华报道进行勘误以建构“积极中国”的新闻实践。研究发现,新闻小组在很大程度上超越了主流媒体设定的认知定型框架,有组织地介入新闻生产各流程。但由于协会自身被符号化,进而将“积极中国”二次他者化为“积极他者”,从而陷入符号-权力的二元对立博弈窠臼;加之媒体对新闻生产流程的严格把控,新闻小组难以参与到选择/过滤环节,反映出既有社会文化框架对受众参与新闻生产的强大制约力。The research on audience participation in news production is seldom conducted from the perspectives of social and cultural framework,while"negative others"is one of the long-term and widespread socio-cultural frameworks of China-related issues in Europe and America.Based on primary sources,this paper examines how the Press Group of the Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding in the 1960s constructing a"positive China"by correcting the China-related coverage in mainstream media from the historical perspective of event/time.It finds that the Press Group has largely exceeded the cognitive stereotypes set by the media,involving in all processes of news production in an organized way,with full participation in information interpretation,partial participation in information gathering,and limited participation in information processing/editing and distribution.However,as the society itself is symbolized,the"positive China"is converted to the"positive others",thus falling into the dilemma between symbol and power;Moreover,due to the strict control of the media on the news production process,it is dificult for the Press Group to participate in the remaining information selection/filtering,reflecting the strong restriction of socio-cultural framework on audience participation in news production.
