Objective:To observe the characteristics, classification and clinical significance of the transformation of the articular processes of the thoracolumbar junction from coronal to sagittal position. Methods:Many sets of vertebrae was selected to observe the orientation of the articular processes of the 9th thoracic vertebra to the 5th lumbar vertebra and their relationship with the corresponding mastoid processes. Results:In both male and female vertebrae,it was found that the articular process of the vertebra in the thoracolumbar junction area changed from the coronal to the sagittal position in two ways, the mutant type and the gradual type. The male mutant type accounted for 35.3%of the male, the gradual typeⅠ44.1%,and the gradual typeⅡ20.6%.The proportion of female mutant type was 52.2%,gradual typeⅠ34.8%,gradual typeⅡ13.1%.The difference between male and female was statistically significant. Conclusion:There are differences between male and female in the stress characteristics and morphological characteristics of the changes in the orientation of the vertebral facet, which is of great significance in the prevention of sports injuries in the thoracolumbar junction of the spine and clinical treatment.
