摘  要:Gong Zizhen(1792-1841)was a renowned thinker and man of letters during the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911).His poems and prose advocate"launching a political reform"and"changing the scheme of things,"brimming with patriotic enthusiasm between the lines.Gong Zizhen often employed figurative techniques to express his opinions on government affairs."The Sick Plum Chamber'which is bursting with implied meanings,is one of such pieces condemning social evils and demanding solutions."The Sick Plum Chamber"is a short essay in which plum trees are used as an allusion to talented people and political situations.By depicting how he planted,raised,enjoyed and treated plum trees,Gong Zizhen expressed his unwillingness to be fettered by any constraints and his wish of pursuing liberation of the self.The article deals with a big subject starting from a seemingly unimportant thingthe plum tree.
