Graham Swift's The Light of Day focuses on the affective ethics involved in interpersonal relationship in post-war British society and reflects on the modern morality and social order that maintain the British national identity.By tracing how the protagonist's harboring a foreign refugee in her London suburban home leads unwittingly to a tragic end of ethical chaos, the novelist dramatizes the invasion of the other by a desire driven by absolute free will and the egocentric motives behind the romantic fantasy of love, examining thereby the loss of empathy in institutionalized philanthropy. The interaction between the“host”and the“refugee”in the novel challenges domestic legal justice and moral norms, and ultimately questions the legitimacy of idol-worshiping love, whereas spiritual reconciliation from“said”to“saying”implies redemptive power of affective care.Restoration of empathy relieves traumatic experience and consolidates mutual emotional support, but the“Nietzschean repetition”of space in this work implies,on the other hand, misgivings about the efficacy of constructing an emotional community for the nation.
