摘　　要：目次一对考古学学科属性及研究目标的定位二立足重大古史问题的考古工作三从社会发展史到考古学文化体系四对中国原始社会史、文明起源问题的阐释五结语中国近代考古学一经兴起,便与重建上古信史这一重要课题密切相联。自二十世纪二十年代起,中国考古学发展的每个阶段,虽呈现不同特点。Xia Nai,a renowned director of archaeological work in China,spent substantial time pondering the ultimate goals and disciplinary essence of archaeology,regularly sharing his insights.During the 1950s and 1960s,Xia advocated that studying the developmental laws of ancient societies via archaeological work would eventually disclose the course of human advancement.However,by the 1980s,he emphasized that archaeology should strive to understand the fundamental principles and comprehensive progress in ancient historical development,independent of the history of societal growth.Xia's theoretical perspectives were unequivocally reflected in his fieldwork and project planning.He viewed archaeological work as a source of reference materials for research on ancient history,and at various times he positioned himself to tackle major historical questions in his planning.Guided by Marxism,Xia adopted a comprehensive mindset throughout the progression of archaeology in the People's Republic of China,advocating a wide-ranging approach that centered on critical questions.He continued to uphold a strong interest in researching and interpreting the central questions of Chinese ancient history while enhancing the academic framework of Chinese archaeology.The"historical"content is subtly present in Xia Nai's edited volumes,Harvests from Archaeology in the People's Republic of China and Archaeological Discovery and Research in the People's Republic of China.These works transition the narrative of Chinese ancient history from"societal development"to aa"system of archaeological cultures."Xia Nai's work in the construction of ancient Chinese history is distinguished by three key elements:he always underscored the importance of integration of theoretical analysis with hands-on research;he was instrumental in building a narrative framework for Chinese archaeology;he had a profound understanding of the indigenous influences that shaped China's ancient cultural development.
