To examine the impact of habitat fragmentation on the diversity and distribution pattern of butterflies during the process of urbanization, the diversity of butterfly in 26 fragmented woodlots in the Huaxi University Town(Guizhou Province)was investigated.Through six-round surveys,81 species of butterflies belonging to 51 genera,5 families were recorded. The number of butterfly species in different woodlots ranged from 2 to 53,with an average of 10.2±9.7 species per woodlot. The result of linear regression analysis showed that the species richness of butterflies was positively correlated with the area of woodlots, and this was accordant to the“area effect”proposed by the island biogeography theory. On the other hand, the correlation of species richness with the distance to the largest woodlot was significantly negative, indicative of an isolation effect.Furthermore, butterfly assemblages among woodlots were not significantly nested or even anti-nested.Based on the results of the current study,it is recommended that habitat integrity should be maintained in urban planning and construction, and woodlots with different sizes should be protected.
