The phrase “Si Wu Xie” comes from the Book of Songs, Lu Song, Jiong and was cited by Confucius in the Analects of Confucius, Governance. Regarding its connotation, scholars throughout history have formed mainly two mainstream interpretive paths: “right” and “sincerity”. Modern and contemporary scholars have proposed new interpretations based on previous studies, where “Si” is the Prayer word and “Wu Xie” is the “endless”. Considering that “Jiong” is a poem praising horses, the original meaning of “Si Wu Xie” should be understood as “wishing to have many horses”. And what Confucius said about “Si Wu Xie” means “right thinking”, which refers to the creative intention of the author of the Book of Songs to encourage good and punish evil, as well as its guiding role in the moral level of readers. It reflects the tradition of Confucius’ interpreting the Book of Songs out of context. This tradition is a comprehensive product of the spring and autumn trend of “taking meaning out of context” and the Confucian philosophy of emphasizing practical functions and ethical education.
