Sherwood Anderson,a pioneer of American modernist literature, portrayed the grotesque figures in the Midwest of the United States in his work“Winesburg,Ohio”.Among them,Enoch in“loneliness”moves towards closure and regression after experiencing various traumas, and ultimately becomes a typical example of anti-growth;on the contrary, the central character George, who runs through the novel, has achieved physical and mental growth in his interactions with various strange people in the“grotesque”world. The article compares the growth paths of Enoch and George from the perspective of anti-growth,revealing that although they started from the same starting point in life, they went on different paths of frustration and success, vividly demonstrating the social status quo of confusion and hope coexisting in the postwar United States.
