摘  要:赫尔曼·麦尔维尔的小说《皮埃尔》长久以来就因整体上缺乏艺术统一性而被诟病。以传记考据和心理分析方法为主导的批评传统倾向于从作家本人在文学市场上的挫败来切入这部看起来任性恣肆的作品,分析他因创作中途对材料失去掌控而造成的前后不一。但实际上麦尔维尔通过叙事距离的调控、传奇叙事结构的借用、贯穿始终的戏剧反讽等策略在其中设置了双重叙事动力。鉴于看似断裂的部分在不同表意轨道中有着不同功能,我们有必要重新解读那些在单一框架中看似离题或不合理的文本成分。Herman Melville's Pierre has long been accused of lacking artistic integrity as a whole.The critical tradition led by biographical and psychoanalytical approaches has shown the tendency to read into this seemingly wayward work in light of Melville's frustrations in the literary market,so as to analyze the inconsistencies stemming from his loss of control of the materials midway through its composition.Yet the fact is that Melville,through strategies like the variation of narrative distance,the deployment of romantic narrative structure and the pervasive presence of dramatic ironies,sets dual narrative dynamics in Pierre.Given that the ostensibly schismatic sections function differently along distinct trajectory of signification,it is necessary to re-approach the textual elements which appear to be irrelevant or unintelligible within a single interpretative framework.
